Why Should I Join?

Through membership in GLCFP, you can contribute to the evolution of model regulations in the marketplace
that maximize both consumer protection and industry potential.

Members come from local, state and federal regulatory agencies, from the regulated industry, academia, and
consumers.  The non-profit association primarily serves a Michigan membership; however, membership is not
limited within the state boundary.

Membership

GLCFP provides opportunities for members to meet and develop effective working relationships with leaders from regulated industries; municipal, state, provincial, and federal regulatory agencies; and professionals from universities and research institutions. The exchange of knowledge and ideas is stimulating and productive.

Through committee work, training courses, and ongoing networking, GLCFP partners keep up-to-date on new developments, regulatory changes, and the latest news in food and consumer protection.

Benefits of Membership

Each spring, GLCFP holds an educational meeting, hosted in different locations in Michigan.

Leaders from regulatory agencies, regulated industries, and academia are featured as speakers. They provide current and accurate information on legislative, regulatory, and technical changes affecting us all. The meetings provide opportunities for face-to-face discussions among all members.  Association resolutions, policies, and drafts of model legislation are considered and voted on.

Current issues and problems are discussed in formal sessions, group discussions, and informally outside of working sessions. The meetings provide opportunities for networking during working hours and at social events. The exchange of ideas and information pertaining to regulatory, technical, analytical or industry issues stimulates effective problem solving.

Membership is $25.00 per year and expires annually. Click here to  complete the online application.

Our Actions

Our organization has established a structured platform allowing stakeholders from industry, regulatory bodies, academia, and consumer groups an opportunity to contribute to the evolution of the FDA model food code. This is completed through a process similar to that of the Conference for Food Protection (CFP). Interested parties are encouraged to submit recommendations for changes to the model food code in the form of issues. During the Annual Business Meeting, members will deliberate on the issues, voting to determine if an issue should be submitted to CFP for consideration. This method allows the issue submitter the opportunity to receive constructive feedback prior to issue submission at CFP.

Great Lakes has submitted 35 issues to the Conference on Food Protection since 2012. Resulting in:

  • 8 Food Code Changes
    • Thawing ROP Fish
    • PIC Duties of Hot and Cold Holding
    • Cleaning and Sanitizing Agents
    • Thawing as Pf
    • Bandage/Finger Cots
    • PIC Duties of Thawing
  • Two Interpretations
  • One Committee
  • One Focus Group
  • One Cooperative Agreement
